Individual Fundraising Strategies
While there is no one strategy for individual fundraising, it is important to consider the steps below.
Outline Your Goals
Consistent fundraising ultimately increases your financial stability. It’s important to annually outline your goals. And, if you have special initiatives that come up during the year, you should identify what your financial goal is for that effort too.
Define Your Story
At the heart of your initiative is your story – why you’re focused on a particular cause. Outlining the “why” for your cause drives partner and donor interest and understanding. As part of your “why,” sharing the impact of your mission helps others see the influence you’re having. Storytelling enables you speaks to their emotions. We all want to be part of a good cause that is changing the world.
Outline Your Audience
Who are you targeting for your fundraising? Perhaps it’s family, friends, church, and community members. Defining each audience and outlining your approach for outreach and ongoing communication is important for developing, retaining, and growing long-time loyal supporters.
Drive Awareness
Engaging with your donors is more important than ever. The marketing rule of 7 states that people need to interact with you an average of seven times before they say yes. Each interaction counts to create meaningful connections and stay top of mind.
For individuals, it’s well known that 12 touchpoints a year builds trust, creates a desire to donate and yields better and longer donor relationships. Also, keep in mind that the rule of thumb is three relationship building communications for one appeal outreach. Each time you appeal, you need to share a reason to ask for more. Show Appreciation
As you move through your year, it’s important to say thank you multiple times. Showing gratitude drives love for you and your work, helps secure repeat donations and may potentially increase the size of donations. Consider surprising and delighting your donors with a special small gift. This will not only show them they are appreciated but help keep you top of mind.
Inform of Impact
Donors want to be sure their gifts are used in the best way possible. Nearly two-thirds of donors say that understanding the impact of their donation would encourage them to give more, according to Nonprofits Source. If you communicate and share the outcomes and benefits of their gifts through your stories, it encourages more giving.
Make it easy to give
Ensure your donors can give seamlessly. For example, providing a URL to your website or include a return envelope in your monthly update can increase donations.
